THE CLIFF HANGER

 

                   A man named Jack was walking along a steep cliff one day when he accidentally got too close to the edge and fell. On the way down he grabbed a branch, which temporarily stopped his fall. He looked down and, to his horror, saw that the canyon fell straight down for more than a thousand feet. He couldn't hang onto the branch forever, and there was no way for him to climb up the steep wall of the cliff.

 

So Jack began yelling for help, hoping that someone passing by would hear him and lower a rope or something. HELP! HELP! Is anyone up there? "HELP!" He yelled for a long time, but no one heard him. He was about to give up when he heard a voice.

 

"Jack, Jack. Can you hear me?"

 

"Yes, yes! I can hear you. I'm down here!"

 

"I can see you, Jack. Are you all right?"

 

"Yes, but who are you, and where are you?

 

"I am the Lord, Jack. I'm everywhere."

 

"The Lord? You mean, GOD?"

 

"That's Me."

 

"God, please help me! I promise if, you'll get me down from here, I'll stop sinning.  I'll be a really good person.  I'll serve You for the rest of my life."

 

Easy on the promises, Jack. Let's get you off from there; then we can talk." "Now, here's what I want you to do. Listen carefully."

 

"I'll do anything, Lord. Just tell me what to do."

 

"Okay. Let go of the branch."

 

"What?"

 

"I said, let go of the branch." Just trust Me.  Let go."

 

There was a long silence.  Finally Jack yelled, "HELP! HELP! IS ANYONE ELSE UP THERE?"

 

Have you ever felt like Jack? We say that we want to know the will of God, but when we find out what it is, we can't handle it.  Sounds too scary--too difficult. We decide to look elsewhere. When He says, "Let go of the things that stand between you and Me, and trust Me with your life," it sounds pretty scary.  But when we let go, we find freedom and safety in His hands."

A Woman's Gift

"Truly I say to you, wherever this gospel is preached in the whole world, what this woman has done will also be spoken of in memory of her."

                                       The disciples were angry and confused. They watched as a woman poured very precious ointment on the head of Jesus. To them, this was extremely wasteful. They thought, "This ointment might have been sold for much, and given to the poor" (v. 9 NLT). Yet Jesus didn't seem upset. In fact, He had an entirely different perspective on what this woman had done.

In Jesus' sight, she had done "a good work" (v. 10). While the disciples seemed to be concerned with the poor, He reminded them that the poor would always be with them. In contrast, He would be with them for only a short time. In addition, her act was preparing His body for burial.

                  The actions of this woman proved to be the final straw for Judas. After hearing Jesus' remark, he went to the chief priests to betray Him. He had not understood the principles Jesus tried to teach. More interested in his own agenda and his own understanding, he was unwilling to place Jesus first.

                            For those who have ears to hear, this woman is still remembered. Her gift showed how much she loved Jesus. It was a gift that cost her something, and it was precious in His sight.

                  There are many things we can do with the money and resources we've been given. But ultimately, the most important things in our lives are the things we do for the Kingdom of God. For Jesus!

                             Today, you have an opportunity to demonstrate your love for Jesus with what you do with your time, talent, and treasure. What memorials are you leaving to reflect your love for Him? How will He remember you for what you do with your resources? 

                             Offer yourself wholeheartedly to Him, and seek first His Kingdom. Make your life a blessing!

TEN LITTLE CHRISTIANS

Ten little Christians standing in a line, One disliked the pastor, then there were nine. Nine little Christians stayed up very late, One slept in on Sunday, then there were eight.
Eight little Christians on their way to heaven, One took the low road, then there were seven. Seven little Christians chirping like chicks, One disliked the music, then there were six.

Six little Christians seemed very much alive, But one lost his interest, then there were five. Five little Christians pulling for Heaven's shore, But one stopped to rest, then there were four. Four little Christians, each busy as a bee, One got her feelings hurt, then there were three. Three little Christians knew what to do, One joined the sports crowd, then there were two.
Two little Christians, our rhyme is nearly done, Differed with each other, then there was one. One little Christian can't do much 'tis true; Brought his friend to Bible study, then there were two.
Two earnest Christians, each won one more, That doubled their number, then there were four. Four sincere Christians worked early and late, Each won another, then there were eight.
Eight little Christians, if they doubled as before, In just a few short weeks, we'd have 1,024. In this little jingle, there's a lesson true, You belong to the building, or the wrecking crew.

SHEPHERD AND SHEEP

                         "My sheep hear My voice, and I know them, and they follow Me." John 10:27 

             In his book about Israel and the Promised Land, Dr. Gary M. Burge tells the story of a ten-year-old shepherd, whose family had only 12 sheep. As part of a military action, their sheep had been gathered into a pen with other sheep from their village.
      The boy's mother begged the soldiers to let her have her original sheep back, but this did not seem possible. How could her 12 be identified among so many hundreds?
      Then her son began playing a simple tune on his flute. All of the sheep heard the sound. But as soon as the boy started to walk away, his family's 12 sheep (and only their 12 sheep) followed him. Dr. Burge concludes, "This boy was a good shepherd. He knew his sheep, and his sheep knew him."
      This story demonstrates the connection between a good shepherd and his sheep. This is exactly the connection Jesus described for His followers. He described Himself as "the good shepherd" (v. 11), a Shepherd so concerned about His sheep that He would give up His life for them.
      Jesus explained that He knows His sheep, and they know Him. He is their "door," providing the way to safety and salvation. All around them, "thieves and robbers" (v. 8) try to deceive the sheep. They come "only to steal and kill and destroy," but Jesus "came that they may have life, and have it abundantly" (v. 10).
      This is the kind of relationship Jesus wants to have with each of us. He already gave His life for us. Now we must choose: We can follow the "thieves and robbers" in the world, wandering in our own direction, or we can surrender to the care of the Good Shepherd.
      Today, seek to develop a more intimate relationship with Jesus. You can trust Him to provide for you, protect you, and guide you. He is your Shepherd.

THE SEED

THE Seed

A successful business man was growing old and
knew it was time to choose a successor to take over the business.

Instead of choosing one of his Directors or his children,
he decided to do something different. He called all the young executives in his company together.

He said, "It is time for me to step down and choose the next CEO. I have decided to choose one of you.

"The young executives were Shocked, but the boss continued. "I am going to give each one of you a SEED today - one very special SEED.

I want you to plant the seed, water it, and come back here one year from today with what you have grown from the seed I have given you.

I will then judge the plants that you bring, and the one I choose will be the next CEO."

One man, named Jim, was there that day and he, like the others, received a seed. He went home and excitedly, told his wife the story. She helped him get a pot, soil and compost and he planted the seed.

Every day, he would water it and watch to see if it had
grown. After about three weeks, some of the other executives began to talk about their seeds and the plants that were beginning to grow.

Jim kept checking his seed, but nothing ever grew.
Three weeks, four weeks, five weeks went by, still nothing.
By now, others were talking about their plants, but Jim didn't have a plant and he felt like a failure.

Six months went by -- still nothing in Jim's pot. He just knew he had killed his seed. Everyone else had trees and tall plants, but he had nothing. Jim didn't say anything to his colleagues, however... He just kept watering and fertilizing the soil - He so wanted the seed to grow.

A year finally went by and all the young executives of the company brought their plants to the CEO for inspection.
Jim told his wife that he wasn't going to take an empty pot.
But she asked him to be honest about what happened. Jim felt sick to his stomach, it was going to be the most embarrassing moment of his life, but he knew his wife was right.

He took his empty pot to the board room. When Jim arrived, he was amazed at the variety of plants grown by the other executives. They were beautiful -- in all shapes and sizes.

Jim put his empty pot on the floor and
many of his colleagues laughed, a few felt sorry for him!

When the CEO arrived, he surveyed the room and greeted his young executives.

Jim just tried to hide in the back. "My, what great plants, trees, and flowers you have grown," said the CEO. "Today one of you will be appointed the next CEO!"

All of a sudden, the CEO spotted Jim at the back of the room with his empty pot. He ordered the Financial Director to bring him to the front.

Jim was terrified. He thought, "The CEO knows I'm a
failure! Maybe he will have me fired!"

When Jim got to the front, the CEO asked him what had happened to his seed - Jim told him the story.

The CEO asked everyone to sit down except Jim. He looked at Jim, and then announced to the young executives, "Behold your next Chief Executive Officer! His name is Jim!"

Jim couldn't believe it. Jim couldn't even grow his seed.

"How could he be the new CEO?" the others said.

Then the CEO said, "One year ago today, I gave everyone in this room a seed. I told you to take the seed, plant it, water it, and bring it back to me today. But I gave you all boiled seeds; they were dead - it was not possible for them to grow.

All of you, except Jim, have brought me trees and plants and flowers. When you found that the seed would not grow, you substituted another seed for the one I gave you.

Jim was the only one with the courage and honesty to bring me a pot with my seed in it. Therefore, he is the one who will be the new Chief Executive Officer!"

The Cross

A young man was at the end of his road , seeing no way out, he dropped to his knees in prayer.

"Lord, I can't go on," he said. "I have too heavy a cross to bear."

The Lord replied, "My son, if you can't bear its weight, just place your cross inside this room.

Then, open that other door and pick out any cross you wish."

The man was filled with relief and said, "Thank you Lord," and he did as he was told.

Upon entering the other room, he saw many crosses; some so large the tops were not visible. Then, he spotted a tiny cross leaning against a far wall.

"I'd like that one, Lord," he whispered.

The Lord replied, "My son, that is the cross you just brought in."

When life's problems seem overwhelming, it helps to look around and see what other people are coping with. You may consider yourself far more fortunate than you imagined.

ALL HE HAD TO OFFER

Here is a story, about a nine year old boy who lived in a rural town in
Tennessee. His house was in a poor area of the community. A church there
had a bus ministry that came knocking on his door one Saturday afternoon.

The child came to answer the door and greeted the bus pastor.

The bus pastor asked if his parents were home and the small boy told him
that his parents take off every weekend and leave him at home to take care
of his little brother. The bus pastor couldn't believe what the child said
and asked him to repeat it. The youngster gave the same answer and the bus
pastor asked to come in and talk with him. They went into the living room
and sat down on an old couch with the foam and springs exposed. The bus
pastor asked the child, "Where do you go to church?"

The young boy surprised the visitor by replying, "I've never been to church
in my whole life." The bus pastor thought to himself about the fact that
his church was less than three miles from the child's house.

"Are you sure you have never been to church?" he asked again.

"I'm sure I haven't," came his answer.

Then the bus pastor said, "Well, son, more important than going to church,
have you ever heard the greatest love story ever told?" and then he
proceeded to share the Gospel with this little nine year old boy.

The young lad's heart began to be tenderized and at the end of the bus
pastor's story, the bus pastor asked if the boy wanted to receive this free
gift from God. The youngster exclaimed, "OF COURSE!"

The child and the bus pastor got on their knees and the lad invited Jesus
into his little heart and received the free gift of salvation. They both
stood up and the bus pastor asked if he could pick the child up for church
the next morning.

"Sure," the nine year old replied.

The bus pastor got to the house early the next morning and found the lights
off. He let himself in and snaked his way through the house and found the
little boy asleep in his bed. He woke up the little boy and his brother and
helped get them dressed. They got on the bus and ate a doughnut for
breakfast on their way to church.

Keep in mind that this boy had never been to church before.

The church was a real big one. The little child just sat there, clueless of
what was going on. A few minutes into the service, these tall unhappy guys
walked down to the front and picked up some wooden plates. One of the men
prayed and the child, with utter fascination, watched them walk up and down
the aisles. He still didn't know what was going on. Suddenly, like a bolt
of lightning, it hit the child what was taking place.

These people must be giving money to Jesus. He then reflected on the free
gift of life he had received just twenty-four hours earlier. He immediately
searched his pockets, front and back, and couldn't find a thing to give
Jesus.

By this time the offering plate was being passed down his aisle and, with a
broken heart, he just grabbed the plate and held on to it. He finally let
go and watched it pass on down the aisle. He turned around to see it passed
down the aisle behind him.

And then his eyes remained glued on the plate as it was passed back and
forth, back and forth all the way to the rear of the sanctuary.

Then he had an idea. This little nine year old boy, in front of God and
everybody, got up out of his seat. He walked about eight rows back, grabbed
the usher by the coat and asked to hold the plate one more time. Then he
did the most astounding thing I have ever heard of. He took the plate, sat
it on the carpeted church floor and stepped into the center of it.

As he stood there, he lifted his little head up and said, "Jesus, I don't
have anything to give you today, but just me. I give you me!"

A man was sleeping at night in his cabin when suddenly his room filled with light and the Savior appeared. The Lord told the man he had work for him to do, and showed him a large rock in front of his cabin. The Lord explained that the man was to push against the rock with all his might. This the man did, day after day.

For many years he toiled from sun up to sun down, his shoulders set squarely against the cold, massive surface of the unmoving rock, pushing with all his might. Each night the man returned to his cabin sore, and worn out, feeling that his whole day had been spent in vain. Seeing that the man was showing signs of discouragement, the adversary decided to enter the picture by placing thoughts into the man's weary mind: "You have been pushing against that rock for a long time, and it hasn't budged. Why kill yourself over this? You are never going to move it." Thus giving the man the impression that the task was impossible and that he was a failure. These thoughts discouraged and disheartened the man. "Why kill myself over this?" he thought. "I'll just put in my time, giving just the minimum effort and that will be good enough." And that is what he planned to do until one day he decided to make it a matter of prayer and take his troubled thoughts to the Lord.

"Lord" he said, "I have labored long and hard in your service, putting all my strength to do that which you have asked. Yet, after all this time, I have not even budged that rock by half a millimeter. What is wrong? Why am I failing?"

The Lord responded compassionately, "My friend, when I asked you to serve me and you accepted, I told you that your task was to push against the rock with all, your strength, which you have done. Never once did I mention to you that I expected you to move it. Your task was to push, and now you come to me, with your strength spent, thinking that you have failed. But, is that really so? Look at yourself. Your arms are strong and muscled, your back sinewy and brown, your hands are callused from constant pressure, and your legs have become massive and hard. Through opposition you have grown much and your abilities now surpass that which you used to have. Yet you haven't moved the rock. But your calling was to be obedient and to push and to exercise your faith and trust in My wisdom. This you have done. I, my friend, will now move the rock."

At times, when we hear a word from God, we tend to use our own intellect to decipher what He wants, when actually what God wants is just simple obedience and faith in Him.... By all means, exercise the faith that moves mountains, but know that it is still God who moves the mountains.

THE SILVERSMITH

Some time ago, a few ladies met in a certain city to study the scriptures. While reading the third chapter of Malachi, they came upon a remarkable expression in the third verse:

"And He shall sit as a refiner and purifier of silver (Malachi 3:3)"

One lady proposed to visit a silversmith, and report to them on what he said about the subject. She went accordingly, and without telling the object of her errand, begged the silversmith to tell her about the process of refining silver.

After he had fully described it to her, she asked, "But Sir, do you sit while the work of refining is going on?"

"Oh, yes madam," replied the silversmith; "I must sit with my eyes steadily fixed on the furnace, for if the time necessary for refining be exceeded in the slightest degree, the silver will be injured."

The lady at once saw the beauty, and comfort too, of the expression, "He shall sit as a refiner and purifier of silver." God sees it needful to put His children into a furnace; His eye is steadily intent on the work of purifying, and His wisdom and love are both engaged in the best manner for us. Our trials do not come at random, and He will not let us be tested beyond what we can endure.

Before she left, the lady asked one final question, "When do you know the process is complete?"

"Why, that is quite simple," replied the silversmith. "When I can see my own image in the silver, the refining process is finished."

Several years ago, a friend of mine and her husband were invited to spendthe weekend at the husband's employer's home. My friend, Arlene, was nervousabout the weekend. The boss was very wealthy, with a fine home on thewater-way, and cars costing more than her house. The first day and eveningwent well, and Arlene was delighted to have this rare glimpse into how thevery wealthy live.The husband's employer was quite generous as a host, and took them to thefinest restaurants. Arlene knew she would never have the opportunity toindulge in this kind of extravagance again, so was enjoying herselfimmensely. As the three of them were about to enter an exclusive restaurantthat evening, the boss was walking slightly ahead of Arlene and her husband.He stopped suddenly, looking down on the pavement for a long, silent moment.Arlene wondered if she was supposed to pass him. There was nothing on theground except a single darkened penny that someone had dropped, and a fewcigarette butts.Still silent, the man reached down and picked up the penny. He held it upand smiled, then put it in his pocket as if he had found a great treasure.How absurd! What need did this man have for a single penny? Why would heeven take the time to stop and pick it up? Throughout dinner, the entirescene nagged at her. Finally, she could stand it no longer. She causallymentioned that her daughter once had a coin collection, and asked if thepenny he had found had been of some value.A smile crept across the man's face as he reached into his pocket for thepenny and held it out for her to see. She had seen many pennies before! Whatwas the point of this? "Look at it." He said. "Read what it says." She readthe words "United States of America." "No, not that; read further." "Onecent?""No, keep reading." "In God we Trust?" "Yes!" "And?" "And if I trust in God,the name of God is holy, even on a coin. Whenever I find a coin I see thatinscription. It is written on every single United States coin, but we neverseem to notice it! God drops a message right in front of me telling me totrust Him? Who am I to pass it by? When I see a coin, I pray, I stop to seeif my trust IS in God at that moment. I pick the coin up as a response toGod; that I do trഉസ്റ്റ് in Him. For a short time, at least, I cherish it as ifit were gold. I think it is God's way of starting a conversation with me.Lucky for me, God is patient and pennies are plentiful!When I was out shopping today, I found a penny on the sidewalk.
