Ready for God's Message

Ready for God's Message

"He began teaching in their synagogues...They were saying, 'Is this not Joseph's son?'...He said, 'Truly I say to you, no prophet is welcome in his hometown'...All the people in the synagogue were filled with rage." - Luke 4:15-28

The people in Jesus' hometown failed to receive His message. Why? Because they were not listening to His words. Instead, they were thinking about His background and family. They wouldn't accept Him for who He truly was, because He was speaking in "his hometown."
These men and women were not open to the move of God. Their minds were closed. They had made up their minds.
They would not even consider that God could give them new revelation and insight. Their ideas were so fixed that they were unwilling to lay aside their prejudices and preconceived ideas.
Fortunately, the reaction was different in Capernaum. There the people actually listened to Jesus and "were amazed at His teaching, for His message was with authority" (v. 32).
How often do people today make the same mistakes as the people of Nazareth? God wants to speak to them, but too often they're caught up in the reactions of the flesh. Instead of listening for God's voice, they're preoccupied with earthly matters.
Many of these people are bound up by prejudices. Others focus on human elements or their surroundings. Some are distracted by a person's style, background, or appearance.
Don't let this happen to you! In every situation, seek to be open to the Holy Spirit. Allow Him to guide you, teach you, warn you, and speak to you.
Right now, submit your life fully to God, and ask Him to help you be sensitive to His Spirit. Ask Him to help you hear and obey His Word.
As the Lord leads you, lay aside your prejudices and preconceived ideas. Give Him permission to speak a fresh word and reveal new insights and deeper truths to you.

FOUR WIVES

There was a rich merchant who had 4 wives. He loved the 4th wife the most and adorned her with rich robes and treated her to delicacies.  He took great care of her and gave her nothing but the best.  He also loved the 3rd wife very much.  He's very proud of her and always wanted to show her off to his friends.  However, the merchant is always in great fear that she might run away with some other men. He too, loved his 2nd wife.  She is a very considerate person, always patient and in fact is the merchant's confidante. Whenever the merchant faced some problems, he always turned to his 2nd wife and she would always help him out and tide him through difficult times.  Now, the merchant's 1st wife is a very loyal partner and has made great contributions in maintaining his wealth and business as well as taking care of the household.  However, the merchant did not love the first wife and although she loved him deeply, he hardly took notice of her.

One day, the merchant fell ill. Before long, he knew that he was going to die soon.  He thought of his luxurious life and told himself, "Now I have 4 wives with me.  But when I die, I'll be alone. How lonely I'll be!  Thus, he asked the 4th wife, "I loved you most, endowed you with the finest clothing and showered great care over you.  Now that I'm dying, will you follow me and keep me company?"  "No way!" replied the 4th wife and she walked away without another word. The answer cut like a sharp knife right into the merchant's heart.

The sad merchant then asked the 3rd wife, "I have loved you so much for all my life.  Now that I'm dying, will you follow me and keep me company?"  "No!" replied the 3rd wife.  "Life is so good over here! I'm going to remarry when you die!"  The merchant's heart sank and turned cold.

He then asked the 2nd wife, "I always turned to you for help and you've always helped me out.  Now I need your help again.  When I die, will you follow me and keep me company?"  "I'm sorry, I can't help you out this time!" replied the 2nd wife.  "At the very most, I can only send you to your grave."  The answer came like a bolt of thunder and the merchant was devastated.

Then a voice called out : "I'll leave with you.  I'll follow you no matter where you go."  The merchant looked up and there was his first wife.  She was so skinny, almost like she suffered from malnutrition.  Greatly grieved, the merchant said, "I should have taken much better care of you while I could have!"

Actually, we all have 4 wives in our lives.  The 4th wife is our body. No matter how much time and effort we lavish in making it look good, it'll leave us when we die.  Our 3rd wife?  Our possessions, status and wealth.  When we die, they all go to others.  The 2nd wife is our family and friends. No matter how close they had been there for us when we're alive, the furthest they can stay by us is up to the grave.  The 1st wife is in fact our soul, often neglected in our pursuit of material wealth and sensual pleasure.  Guess what?  It is actually the only thing that follows us wherever we go.  Perhaps it's a good idea to cultivate and strengthen it now rather than to wait until we're on our deathbed to lament.

The Lord's Favor

"He opened the book and found the place where it was written, 'The Spirit of the Lord is upon Me because He has anointed me...to proclaim the favorable year of the Lord.'"

- Luke 4:17-19

The time had come! Jesus was sent into the world in the "fullness of time" (Galatians 4:4). At just the right time!
He came to proclaim that the time had come for God's people to experience His favor. God was opening a new chapter. This was the "acceptable year of the Lord" (NKJV), the time of His favor.
The word translated "proclaim" literally means to declare something openly, as if it already has been done. Jesus was not describing a theory, but a fact. The fact was that He had been anointed. He had been sent to let people know that this was the time for God's favor.
In the same way, Jesus was sent to let us know that the acceptable year of the Lord has taken place. When Jesus came, He wanted us to know that the time had come to experience God's favor.
He came to preach the Gospel to those in need, to heal those who are brokenhearted, to proclaim liberty to those who are captives, to help those who are blind to see again, and to provide freedom for those who are oppressed.
These are the things Jesus came to do in our lives. This is why He was sent!
Today, ask God to open your mind and heart. Let Jesus be the Healer of your soul. Let Him liberate you from anything that imprisons your life.
Cry out to Him for those you know who might be broken or confused, those who might be weak in spirit or body. Believe that God can give them the strength and freedom they need.
Declare that Jesus is your Lord. Allow Him to do His work and so bring the full scope of His anointing into your life right now.
